Growing Old in Germany – Diversity and Inequality of Opportunities for Participation
The Ninth Government Report on Older People presents the diversity and variety of living situations of older people in Germany and examines whether social participation is equally possible for all older people.
The report shows that opportunities for participation are distributed unequally across society. This becomes particularly clear when the interaction of several characteristics of social inequality is taken into account, which can lead to serious disadvantages in individual cases. Against this background, the report examines, among other things, the living situations of older people with a migration background and older LGBTI* people. In addition, the causes and manifestations of age discrimination are examined and key points for an integrated policy for a good life in old age are identified. The report makes it clear that special attention must be paid to socially disadvantaged groups in order to ensure equal and self-determined participation for all older people.
The Commission of the Ninth Ageing Report derives recommendations from its report and proposes measures that can contribute to ageing well in times of change and multiple stresses.
